General Aim

The Maerlant Centre aims to unite forces of scientific research, cultural communication, new technologies and business life. It designs ICT products pivoting around historical and cultural topics, focusing on a critical reading of relevant sources belonging to the cultural heritage of the Low Countries, situated in a wider European context.

In doing so, the Maerlant Centre implements available scientific and technological expertise in order to develop ICT products which are to be used in:

  • university and higher education;
  • secondary education;
  • permanent education;
  • society at large (museums, libraries, historical sites,
  • cultural organizations).

Intrinsic Delineation of ICT Products

All types of documents (texts, iconographic images, maps, graphics, monuments…) from all periods and all areas of the history of the Low Countries.

Publication criterion: the documents must be relevant and must be approached using scientific methods, concerning their contents as well as the methods used.

The sources are analyzed, interpreted and explained in a problem-oriented way, starting from just one source or from an entire cluster.

Target Groups

Our ICT products (website, cd-rom) are adapted to specific target groups:

  • University and college education;
  • High school education;
  • Permanent education;
  • Organizations, associations and companies who are involved in or interested in cultural or historical education;
  • Individuals interested in the cultural and historical heritage of the Low Countries.

Our products are mostly designed in Dutch.
