The Organ Grinders
The photo catches a discussion between two organ
grinders. The young one, becoming aware of the
photographer, gives up the talking. The old organ
grinder keeps on talking, he seems to be caught by
the topic, he gestures slightly, as if he wanted to
prove something. The photo does not provide any
information on his good will. Since he is aware of
his being looked at, it means that he turns his own
speech into a show.
The barrel organs are different (accompanied by the
fortune teller parrot, the organ grinders are
multi-qualified! ). This time, by means of a single
visual discourse, Ionescu manages to grasp the
evolution of musical instruments. Obviously, the
barrel organ of the old organ grinder has a more
ancient design and a heavier look (it is a
combination between a trolley and a carved wooden
box). The younger organ grinder is better dressed
and he owns a light, portable barrel organ (it has
the shape of a suitcase). The function has prevailed
over the ornament!
