Academy Boulevard in 1928
Here is University Square, in a picture dating from
1928.
One can see the electric trams, and in the left side
of the image, a piece of the Carpati restaurant’s
garden. Next to it, the University building, who was
built in a neo-classic style between 1857 and 1869
by architect
Alexandru Orascu under Prince Alexandru
Ghica (1856-1858) and was, completed under the rule
of Carol I. The inauguration took place on 14
December 1869. Subsequently, the building was
enlarged in several stages according to plans drawn
up by architect N. Ghika-Budesti. The University
Palace covers today the whole area from the
University Square to the Nicolae Balcescu Boulevard,
the Edgar Quinet street and the Academy Street. The
building has facades on all surrounding streets.
