Calea

Victory Avenue in 1923, Sunday at noon
Victory Avenue was the Bucharesters’ favourite
promenade during the interwar period.
The picture captures the Sunday promenade, crowds of
people and a flood of comfortable automobiles. Cars
were quickly introduced in Bucharest, but –as this
picture shows- they did not really change the rhythm
of life: here people and cars “walk” side by side.
Strangely a clock is very present in this image. But
the real temporality seems marked by the flabby
clocks of Dali. The time flows lazily and Victory
Avenue is supple, sinuous, winding. In this world
everybody knows everybody.
